Mick has had an email from our BC East Mids Contact -
"I want to take this opportunity to update you on Accredited Marshal Scheme progress and advise you that approval has been provided for the use of the Scheme across 4 counties of the East Midlands – Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
The key activity now is to recruit the marshals to support the roll out of the scheme over the next 3 years or so, starting in the Vale of Belvoir and Lincolnshire areas primarily although not exclusively.
As a result of this approval it would be really useful if you could promote the training to your club/team members, riders and their parents and supporters as well as any other contacts who you think might be interested in training to become an Accredited Marshal and support the delivery of road races in the region.
I have created events on my REO Facebook Page for both the training courses that you can share through social media
Accredited Marshal Training - 18th March
Accredited Marshal Training – 7th May
or
Alternatively please circulate the link to the video and information page on the BC website www.britishcycling.org.uk/accreditedmarshal?c=EN
"
This does not cover TT marshalling, whether under BC or not, so it is unlikely we get many volunteers.
Those of us that have marshalled (any type) know the difficulty and ambiguity around stopping traffic. For road racing, the Accredited Marshal has a little more guidance on what they can do:
"What is an accredited marshal?
An accredited marshal is a road cycling marshal who has been trained to use the 'Stop! Cycle Race' sign to legally stop and hold traffic to allow the safe passage of a cycle race. It is an offence for a driver to fail to stop.
The 'Stop! Cycle Race' sign was approved for use and implemented by the Department for Transport in 2013 and was included in The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016. "
Overview of responsibilities
Follow the race on race radio
Use the sign to stop traffic
Hold traffic to allow safe passage of the race convoy or ‘bubble’
Release and thank traffic after the race has passed.
As you can see, this does only work for RRs, as there is no 'bubble' in TTs
BC are aiming to have this rolled out for all events on the road in the next 2-3 years. There is no legal requirement currently for Marshals to be accredited, but the drive to get accreditation for all is to improve the general safety of road racing and to reduce the sizeable insurance premiums associated to events.
We don't currently run any RRs, but if any member wants to get accreditation to 'put something back in' then that would be lovely. It is a bit of a commitment, with at least 5 races before you get accreditation and 5 races a year to keep.
For those also inclined there is always the need and training available for commissaires, so plenty of opportunity to support the local race scene if you have the time available and inclination
Thanks for listening folks
